Young woman getting her teeth examined

These are uncertain times. For almost all of us, we have never had to experience times like we are in now. We are being told to limit social interaction and stay indoors and isolated as often as possible. Many of us are nervous to go out, even to see a dentist. Still, we must all be proactive when it comes to our dental health even if getting into the dentist for an exam or cleaning may be scary to us with, the ongoing global climate being what it is. Dr. Michael Stern and his team at Smile Brighter Willoughby Hills understand the trepidation people may be feeling right now. If you don’t feel comfortable quite yet with coming into Dr. Stern for preventive dental care, including an exam and cleaning, a strong at-home regimen becomes more important than ever before.

Regular Brushing

Brushing at least two times a day is something you probably already know to do, but make sure you are doing so for two minutes each time. It will assure that more plaque is being removed and, with the correct brushing technique of keeping the brush at a 45-degree angle using a back and forth motion at the gum line, that your teeth will continue to remain in great shape. Also, make sure you don’t brush too hard as this can damage your enamel.

Waiting to Brush

It has been found that it takes about an hour for the saliva in your mouth the neutralize the damaging acids created by the foods you eat. If you brush too soon, you could be wearing away your tooth enamel before saliva has been able to repair any early damage. A great practice to get in the habit of is to drink a glass of water after you eat to wash away food and bacteria.

Floss Daily

The plaque which your toothbrush cannot reach between your teeth is removed by daily flossing. Missing this flossing will allow the food particles to remain between your teeth and cause damage to both your teeth and gums. Be careful when you floss though, as snapping the floss between your teeth could damage your gums. Instead, wrap the floss between your middle fingers into a c shape and gently slide it between your teeth to remove any rogue particles.
